With the strong and noble push toward returning to the basics of simple and healthy living and farming, it’s important to recognize that living green has to start inside each of us. Because we live in a part of the world that uses chemicals as freely as it does water, we have each been exposed to thousands of toxins that we must routinely clear from our bodies. A clean body leads to a clean mind and a clean mind naturally lends itself to a sense of peace and well-being, which is reflected out into the world.
Of the 70,000 chemicals that are currently used in our country, the EPA has noted that approximately 65,000 of them are potentially harmful, if not down right hazardous to your health. The question in my mind is…why are they still allowed to use them? Until we can get these various forms of hazardous toxins removed from our environment permanently we have to assume ultimate responsibility to take care of our health and the safety of our children by purging our bodies.
Imagine having a car for 20 years that never received an oil change or a home that never had the benefit of a spring cleaning and then you’ll know how your body feels from its lack of attention to purging its old and potentially harmful gunk.

Toxins normally go to the liver where they are processed first and the toxins are converted into water-soluble molecules. The water-soluble molecules are then transported to the kidneys and eliminated through the bladder. If for some reason the kidney cannot process the water-soluble molecules they are passed to the skin for elimination through the sweat glands. If the liver cannot process a toxin to the kidney it is then eliminated thru the colon as a fat-soluble molecule. And if the colon cannot process a fat-soluble molecule through the normal channel it then passes it to the skin for elimination through the oil ducts. In addition to this the body also has the ability to encapsulate toxins in fat in what are called apidose cells which, in turn, the body can eliminate. So those fat cells you’re always fretting about have actually been doing your organs a huge favor! The key is to provide the adipose cells with the proper nutrition they need to provide a healthy environment in which to coax them into eliminating the toxins.
There are two types of cleanses we can do to detoxify our bodies. A nutritional cleanse is a daily approach to support the organs associated with detoxification. It is gentle and non-irritating to the body. The nutritional cleanse involves adding in to your daily diet fresh, preferably organic, dark-green, leafy vegetables plus water with a pH level of 8 or greater to help move this infusion of fiber and toxic release through and out of your body. I’ve also found great support in two powerful Ayurvedic techniques: sipping plain hot water, with nothing added to it, every 10-15 minutes to help keep my lymphatic system flowing, and daily oil pulling.
Modern oil pulling was introduced in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach, MD. Dr. Karach claims that this simple treatment achieves remarkable results with illnesses like migraine headaches, bronchitis, diseased teeth, arterio thrombosis, chronic blood disorders such as leukemia, arthritis and related illnesses, neuro-physiological paralysis, eczema, gastro enteritis, peritonitis, heart disease, kidney disease, meningitis, and woman’s hormonal disorders.
Recipe for Ayurvedic Oil Pulling Technique:
- Prior to breakfast place one tablespoon of coconut oil, sesame, oil or olive oil into your mouth, but do not swallow it.
- Move the oil slowly in the mouth and pull it through your teeth for 15-20 minutes.
Swishing activates the enzymes that draw toxins out of the blood through the mucous membranes in the mouth. As the process continues, the oil becomes thinner and white. Be certain to spit the oil out after you’ve completed the swishing process and thoroughly rinse your mouth and brush your teeth.
The isolated detoxification protocol is the second type of cleanse and is very different. It is typically more aggressive and can be stressful to the body. It is generally completed within 10 days to two weeks. Since we are liberating massive amounts of toxicity that is not going through the body’s normal process the body needs to find a way to deal with it and there may be a Herxheimer reaction, typically experienced as having flu-like symptoms.
The internet is crawling with detoxification protocols and I have tried quite a few. The cleanses I have found that work best for me are the original Master Cleanse protocol without modification and Dr. John Douillard’s Short Home Cleanse (lifespa.com).
It is imperative to provide on-going assistance to each of your organs through eating whole foods on a daily basis. Try adding burdock root, dandelions, and rhubarb, into your diet especially when they are in season and also kelp. These powerful nutrients will help facilitate the cleansing process and support your system. Burdock root in particular has a lot of very valuable components including a fiber called inuline. Inuline actually changes the way we digest sugars so that burdock root does more than just provide targeted support for our organs. It also has some value in the metabolic sense in regards to how our bodies react to sugars and insulin, which in turn helps to reduce inflammation.
After detoxifying my body, I have experienced euphoria that resonates into every area of my life. Cleansing provides benefits not only to the body, but also to the mind and emotions. Living green really begins with your choices of how you can best serve your body. It is your own living, breathing temple and it relies on you to treat it with reverence.
In life it is too easy to hurry through our meals and not be mindful of what we are infusing our selves with on all levels. I would like to suggest that if Dr. Masaru Emoto’s studies that were publishing in his book, Hidden Messages In Water, are correct and that our thoughts and intentions actually transform a molecule of water into something of immense beauty or decay, that we may want to take a moment to infuse the foods that have been provided to us with thoughts of love and gratitude. After all, these beautiful and healing creations are also made of water molecules and so are we. Eat lovingly, mindfully and gratefully and with the intention that every bite you passionately enjoy, you are healed.
